The Sri Lankan Airlines is to acquire two more aircraft this year to cater to the country’s rapidly-growing tourism industry, and thereby increase its worldwide flights. It plans to increase its flights to Paris, Frankfurt, Milan, Rome, Bangkok, Singapore, Kuala Lumpur,Shanghai, Karachi and many cities in India.
The airlines obtained one wide-bodied Airbus A330-220 last month, and are to acquire two A320s shortly. It launched its new service to China’s largest city Shanghai last month. This flight to Shanghai operates via Bangkok on 4 days a week. With the launch of the four weekly flights, SriLankan now serves three cities in China – the others being Beijing and Hong Kong – with a total of 10 services, including seven to mainland China.
SriLankan’s global route network spans to 49 cities in 31 countries, and currently operates nearly 150 flights per week from Colombo. July/August had been a remarkable period for the Sri Lankan Airlines as during this period it was able to bag several prestigious awards which included:
Gold Award for energy efficiency won by the catering Wing on August 3rd, the Best South Asian Airline award for fifth year at Kuala Lumpur on August 1st and the award of Top Airline by Growth in Passenger Carriage from Singapore during end of July.
